Zephyr Designed Vertical Wind Turbine

The Zephyr Vertical Wind Turbine (ZVWT) is an omni-directional wind turbine with the unique ability to consistently spin regardless of the wind direction. Its scalable size saves space and produces more power from the same foot print than a traditional 3 bladed wind turbine. The patented features of the ZVWT allow it to work in low wind speed conditions and in high turbulence, so that they can operate in close proximity of each other in urban areas.

This design is highly scalable and modular, allowing the expansion of capacity by adding height extensions without changing the original super structure. The modularity of the ZVWT will give the engineers greater flexibility to develop suitable designs under any given set of circumstances. As some of the Zephyr photo renderings will show, the ZVWT also provide architects with even further design flexibility because of its aesthetically pleasant appearance and available choices of colours and materials.

Advantages of the Zephyr design:

The Zephyr wind turbine has many advantages over the other vertical axis wind turbines and horizontal wind turbines:

1. With its patented "reversed winglet" technology, the ZVWT is a more efficient vertical axis design that protects the rotor from fatigue caused by reciprocating wind forces.

2. The speed self-regulation feature generates more consistent power on an annual basis without additional mechanisms.

3. The sturdy mounting design and lower operating speed generates very low vibrations and sound reverberations, allowing it to be mounted in locations not suitable for other wind turbines.

4. The ZVWT performs very well at lower heights and in turbulent wind condition.

5. Installations are simple in urban settings with sufficiently open space and wind resources.

6. The aesthetically pleasant design can be incorporated into any architectural plan as an energy enhancing feature.

7. In a suburban setting, neighbours can share the power and the costs of an installation (where applicable).

8. Fixed position and smaller foot print makes it more suitable for marine use.

9. The design can be adapted to hydro applications (shallow streams).
